In the few verses where Lydia is mentioned, there are a ton of empowering lessons and qualities loaded in them for our spiritual growth. The story of Lydia teaches women, Christian values that we should reflect in our everyday lives. Lydia is a beautiful example of femininity, determination and obedience.
What an inspiring woman.
Lydia’s story in a few verses
One Sabbath day, Paul and his companions went to the river’s shore to find a place to pray. Upon their arrival, they found a group of women who were already there, gathered. Our woman of note, Lydia was part of the group. Paul started talking to them and shared the message. Lydia was attentively listening to every word coming out of his mouth. The Lord touched her heart and she openly gave her life to Christ. Lydia got baptized, along with her whole family. Lydia then invited Paul and his companions to come to her house and enjoy her hospitality. Not only did she invite them, but she urged them. Her love and persistence were so genuine and evident. Hence why they had no other choice but to answer favourably to her request.
Lydia a proverb 31 woman
Lydia is the reflection of the proverb 31 woman. She was an entrepreneur, seller of expensive purple cloth. Lydia was hospitable and generous. She opened her home to the apostles. She wanted to make her home, theirs and also the base from which the apostles worked in the area.
"She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy." - Proverbs 31:20
Lydia opened her heart and ears to God’s call. She wanted to serve her community and she opened the doors to her sweet home. She demonstrated true signs of self-sacrificial love and generosity. This teaches us that we need to surrender every aspect of our lives. We need to let God take full commands and let Him use us to serve others…
Last week, we covered the rich story of Dorcas (you can read it here).
