What it truly means
Love thy neighbour, love your neighbour as you love yourself, serve others. Those are all synonyms of the divine standards the Lord calls us to, unselfishness and love. To serve others means, to put pride aside and to consider the needs of others before our own. It means to put our life on the line, for the salvation of the multitude. Serving others is considering the needs of others and making sure they feel safe and loved by God, by us.
This will happen naturally when the Love of Christ nourishes our soul and fills out heart. As Christians, we need to follow the path in which Christ walked. Christ came on earth to serve and not to be served. He laid His life for us to live eternally with Him.
Hearing the voice of The Holy Spirit
As christians, we need to do everything that is in our power to serve and love others. Even when our heart is heavy or when a small voice inside is telling us not to. It is the enemy of our soul, wanting to discourage and prevent us from becoming like Christ. This is when we need to stand strong and accomplish what God put in our heart.
And the effort to bless others will react in blessings upon ourselves. This was the purpose of God in giving us a part to act in the plan of redemption. He has granted men the privilege of becoming partakers of the divine nature and in their turn, of diffusing blessings to their fellow men.

By doing so, we will automatically become stronger in the faith and add precious value to our character. By listening to the sweet and soft voice of the Holy Spirit, the enemy will loose victory over us.
Each of us should please our neighbours for their good, to build them up. -Romans 15:2
